Mastering the Art of Flower Pressing: Your Guide to Mold-Free Blooms

Preventing mold when pressing flowers with a wooden flower press is crucial for preserving their quality. Here are the top three ways to prevent mold:

Proper Drying: The most effective way to prevent mold is to ensure your flowers are thoroughly dried before placing them in the press. Follow these steps for proper drying:

  • Harvest flowers in the morning when they have the least amount of moisture.

  • Remove excess moisture by gently patting the flowers dry with a paper towel.

  • Bundle the flowers loosely and hang them upside down in a dark, dry, and well-ventilated area. Use string or rubber bands to secure the bundles.

  • Allow the flowers to air dry until they are completely crisp to the touch. The drying time may vary depending on the flower type and humidity levels.

Use Absorbent Lining Paper: When placing your flowers in the press, use absorbent lining paper, such as blotting paper or parchment paper, between the layers of flowers. This lining paper helps absorb any remaining moisture from the flowers during the pressing process. Be sure to change the lining paper regularly, especially if it becomes damp.

Check for Mold During Pressing: While the flowers are in the press, periodically check for any signs of mold development. Mold often appears as white or gray spots on the flowers or the lining paper. If you notice mold forming, carefully remove the affected flowers and replace the lining paper. Ensure the press is well-ventilated and not placed in a damp or humid environment during the pressing process.

By following these steps and maintaining a clean and dry pressing environment, you can significantly reduce the risk of mold when pressing flowers with a wooden flower press.
